The Cadillac ELR was initially presented to the public as the concept back in January 2009 at the North American International Auto Show. Four years later, the ELR model was born and made into production in 2013 and sold as a 2014 model. It was a GM’s way of introducing the more fuel efficient hybrid engine unit to the younger buyers in a form of a 2 door sporty coupe. The ELR inherited the drivetrain used in the Chevrolet Volt model, with few modifications. The car was awarded “Best Production Vehicle” in 2013 and was a finalist in the Green Car Vision Awards in 2012. Today, the second generation of the ELR is coming out soon and it looks really promising, to say the least.
2016 Cadillac ELR exterior changes
There are very few distinctive differences between the new 2016 Cadillac ELR and the previous model, due to the fact that the time gap between the two is just not big enough. At the front, the new ELR features a larger grille and a slightly redesigned front bumper. The new model also offers a set of LED based headlights, which are slightly different than before. Fog lights feature LED based lamps only and the turn lights are located near the front wheels, at each fender. The new ELR features 20 inch alloyed rims, as well as hidden door handles. At the back, there is practically no difference compared to the previous model. Taillights feature same design style, LED pattern arrangement, as well as the single stripe taillight located at the top of the trunk lid. The car remained extremely aerodynamic, capable of attaining high speeds with great stability and control.
The cabin of the new Cadillac ELR is quite luxurious. Comfortable seats feature leather upholstery and the front seats are heated – as well as the leather coated steering wheel. There are minimal amount of buttons and switches, mostly located at each spike of the steering wheel, in order to keep things clean and simple and maintain elegancy, without sacrificing ease of use. Subtle wood elements, as well as plush coated floor are the necessary details to maintain balance and break the monotony. The model will feature whole range of technology equipment, such as Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and 8 inch LCD display with infotainment system, voice controls, a navigation system, a 10 speaker Bose sound system, satellite radio, 4G LTE, built in Wi-Fi hotspot and many safety features, such as OnStar emergency communications, blind spot monitoring, lane crossing assists, just to name a few.
Engine and specs
The new Cadillac ELR will feature two-engine configuration. The primary electric motor, rated at 157 horsepower and outputting 295 lb ft of torque, which is fueled by a 17.1 kWh Li-Ion battery pack and the secondary 1.4 liter inline 4 gasoline engine, rated at 3 horsepower. The secondary gasoline powered engine is primarily used to generate electricity to the electric motor, but can be used to boost the ar’s performance, as well. The range of the car using only the electric motor is around 40 miles.
